Digital information units

Real-world uses

Data units are central to computing, telecommunications, and digital media. Hard drives and SSDs are sold by gigabytes or terabytes. Internet service providers advertise bandwidth in megabits per second. Cloud storage bills by the gigabyte-month. Video streaming quality is defined by bitrate — 4K video typically requires 15–25 Mbps. Network engineers plan backbone capacity in terabits per second, and database administrators measure query throughput in bytes processed.

History

Claude Shannon's 1948 paper "A Mathematical Theory of Communication" formalised the bit as the fundamental unit of information. The byte (8 bits) was standardised by IBM in the early 1960s. As storage grew, the industry casually used "kilobyte" to mean both 1,000 and 1,024 bytes. In 1998, the International Electrotechnical Commission introduced binary prefixes (kibi, mebi, gibi) to resolve this ambiguity, though adoption remains uneven.

Common mistakes

The most pervasive confusion is between bits and bytes — ISPs advertise in megabits per second (Mbps), while files are sized in megabytes (MB), differing by a factor of eight. Another major pitfall is the KB ambiguity: storage manufacturers use 1 GB = 1,000,000,000 bytes, while operating systems historically used 1 GB = 1,073,741,824 bytes (1 GiB). People also mistakenly treat data transfer speeds as equivalent to download speeds, ignoring protocol overhead.

Measurement standards

The International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC 80000-13) defines binary prefixes: 1 KiB = 1,024 bytes, 1 MiB = 1,048,576 bytes. The SI decimal prefixes (kB = 1,000 bytes, MB = 1,000,000 bytes) apply to data units as they do to all SI quantities.
