History
Before reliable instruments, sailors estimated speed by tossing a wooden log overboard and counting knots on a trailing rope — giving rise to the unit "knot." The first practical speedometer was developed by the Croatian Josip Belusic in 1888. Ernst Mach lent his name to the ratio of an object's speed to the local speed of sound in the 1920s.
